Hey guys, I am looking to get a 92-96 f150 or f250. Depending on how much it costs I may be forced to get a 6cyl. I would like to be able to use this truck to pull a trailer with my mustang on it. Can a 6cyl f150 or 250 pull that easily?

Also are the transmissions the same in the v8's and 6cyl's? I would like an automatic, but if I do get a 6cyl I would eventually like to swap a 5.0 or 351 into it, is that a simple straight forward swap?

well a 300 6 cylinder will pull about anything pretty much.... they use to put 300 6's in dump trucks, so yea.... it'll pull your trailor with your mustang on it, but it won't pull it very fast, as in, 55mph going up mountains.... these motors aren't known for the horsepower, they're known for torque

I was pulling my friend's small tractor with 80 lbs in each tire, a front loader, and a bush hog on it. I have abnormally stiff springs but the truck motivated on down the road ok and I have 3.55 gears.

If you plan on using the truck for a haul truck, I wouldn't buy anything other than the I-6. Its a damned tractor motor. I love mine. Hauling a trailer with a camaro on it only dropped my fuel mileage 0.6mpg, as oppose to pulling the empty trailer. Still was able to go my usually 65mph down the road.

Oh cool, I didnt know they were torque machines. Maybe I'll look for an I-6 now haha. I am not going to be doing a bunch of towing, but I would like to be able to tow my mustang to the track every once and a while. How is the gas mileage from the I-6 compared to the 5.0 or 5.8? Not while towing, just daily driving?

None of them are gonna be phenomenal. My 95 F150 2wd with a 300/5spd got 15mpg when I got it with 180k miles on it. A good tune-up and a timing bump, and I probably could have squeezed 18mpg or so.

yeah the 300 is probably your best bet. i love mine. when i was in the process of restoring my 84 chevy el camino i towed it with my truck with no problems at all.

My 4.9 will pull anything I ask it to. I pull a 6x10 box trailer loaded with tools every day, and sometimes lots of materials in the back. I sometimes load it to the bumpstops and the truck still goes. I get about 10-11 MPGs pulling the trailer every day city or highway, pulling the trailer is like pulling a parachute.

I usually get 14-16 mpg in town, but the other day i was on the interstate and got 22 or so. it depends on how you treat them too as well as a tune up. i just did a complete tune up on mine

My 300 gets about 15-16 mpg combined in my driving.

To answer your other questions, yes, the 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 all used the exact same transmissions.

And if you are set on the 6, look for one with 3.55 gears (that would be code 19 for 3.55 open, or code H9 for 3.55 Limited Slip). Mine has 3.08s and I'm one of the slowest things on the road. I think the gears would really wake it up and give it the infusion of pep that it needs to get moving. It's as quick with 2000+ pounds being towed/hauled as it is empty lol
