Default do i need both tanks?

Since we're on the subject, i may need to drop out the rear tank of my '93 f150 to change the leaf spring hanger bracket, and also because it may be leaking anyway. my question would be whether i can crimp off the lines going to the rear tank and not reinstall it, and just use the front tank, or whether the system cannot operate unless both tanks and associated wiring and hoses are in place.

Default Tank problems

My 93 F150 ext cab, swb......... Front tank has been out of commission for several years. Trying to get it fixed. Went to Ford dealership with VIN number to price parts and get info. Was told that the front tank is 17gal, and rear is 18gal. Kind of hard to believe since I've run the rear tank dry on several occasions in the past month, notably on a trip from FL to TX, three times in two days, plus again after arriving in TX and the fill up is never more than approx 14 gals. Last fill up two days ago at 11:30PM when motor was sputtering was 14.31gallons, at 150 miles even. Looks like 10.5 MPG, which is not that good (4.9, auto, 2WD). I've read online that the total capacity is 34.5 gals and both tanks are smaller than what the dealer told me. I don't get it. Why, if the rear tank is supposed to be 18gal, dealer info, would it only take 14.5 approx gals? And I mean it runs dry........ is it possible that when it runs out there are still 3 to 4 gals in the tank. Don't seem likely to me. And just wanted to report too, that the dealer quote for tank, pump, sending unit and O rings was just over 1700 dollars. Yes, 1700. Can you believe that garbage. Do they seriously think they are winning fans and influencing people with prices like that? I can get both the tank and pump on Ebay for nor much more than 200, so what are these fleecers tryn to do to us? Not a good advertisment for up grading to a new 150, IMV. Dealer prices were:

Tank - $565.54,
pump - 497.89,
new guage - 250.16, (didn't say which)
a jumper for the pump - 50.87, and
a seal - 9.30.

Another gauge was quoted at 286.73.

But get this, the tank and this second gauge was not-available - couldn't buy them if I was willing to, which I was not.

He wrote on the quote sheet that my wheel-base was 139inches, and told me there was an open recall on my cruise control. I went over to the service dept to see what recalls had taken place on my truck and they didn't have anything over 10 years old in their computer any more. Great. Just great. They went ahead and did the recall for the cruise control, of course havin to take my personal information to do it, and get this, since then I've had three emails and three calls trying to sell me a new truck. The last one offered me a gob of money for my '93......

I had told them I was not interested in a new truck, but I guess they didn't listen.

Regards to all. Hope some of this info helps. I intend to get the seal from the above list, but everything else after market.

1988 F150

Actual Gallons of Fuel

SWB

Front tank 16.5 gallons
Rear tank 17.5 gallons

LWB
Front tank 19.0 gallons
Rear tank 17.5 gallons
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ford Engineers changed the F-150 rear fuel tank size in 1987.

Auto Parts Stores and their books still call the 1988-up rear tank an 18.2 gallon tank for fuel pump purposes.

I know this is an old thread, just hope it helps someone.

Default Tank size

Newbie here. Just picked up a 1995 Eddie Bauer 2WD short bed. Ran the rear tank dry and it only holds 9 gallons?? running the front tank dry now but I suspect it holds at least 16 to 19 gallon. I do not see where anyone has a small rear tank is something wrong?

Hey, Jarhead........
I wasn't able to get anyone to pick up on my point that I ran out of gas several times, then on refill only took as little as 14 gallons on a 18 gallon rear tank (according to the local ford dealership who told me the front tank was 17 and the rear was 18 - I don't believe it). If true, which I seriously doubt than I suspect that the fuel pump sending unit or something else associated with the pump is malfunctioning and somehow involved because there is no earthly way I should have run out of gas on an 18 gallon tank and then take only 14 gallons on refill. From what you say, seems you might have some of the same issues I have.

I wish you luck figuring it out - for me, I'm going to replace first the front tank and pump and when that's up and running, replace at least the rear fuel pump and sending unit...... and hope like hell that fixes it. Hang in there in your search for answers.

BTW, all of this gets real pricey very fast, you've probably noted.

Just drained and filled the front tank, it took 16.44 Gallons. Whent he gas guage showed Empty I still had around 3 gallons left before it started to sputter so that explains the front. The rear tank is supposed to be 18 but last time I drained it it only took 9 gallons. I'll try again and let it run dry.

87 had but about the same, will try to get numbers posted when get book back.
Try replacing the fuel FILTERS. Gas made in the last few years and P. Owners, you
Never can tell.

Not sure the size. BUT it takes over $120 to fill both tanks - California gas prices, got to love them
