hi i got a 92 f-150 it has dual fuel tanks,,,, i got some issue's with em..
the front tank the gas gauge works once in a blue moon, im thinking sending unit? or float? the rear tank dont work. when i switch it to the rear from inside the truck stays started for a couple seconds then dies out? so i dont know if its the fuel pump? fuel switch? or what? i dont know if the rear gauge works either.... if anyone can help with some thoughts that would be great..... they realy made these duel tanks so much drama back then ,,, to many parts to em...from what i read

it's most probably the sending unit failure in the front tank. To check the rear one - switch to rear tank and turn the ignition on. You should hear the pump working tor 2 seconds. If you'll hear it - check the fuel pressure and compare it with front tank pressure. For normal engine work it must be higher than 20 PSI (35-40 is claimed normal by Ford). You can figure out if there's any gas in the rear tank with a 3 feet long piece of wire - insert it through the fill-up and see if it will get wet.

You're going to have to drop the front tank and pull the fuel pump to install a new sending unit - might as well put a new pump in while it's apart and save yourself doing this again next month.

If the switch tests good, your rear pump is probably bad. Once again, might as well change out the sending unit while you're in there.

You can run on one tank, though - just don't flip the switch. I only have the rear tank working in my truck. I've had issues with fuel returning to the wrong tank, but if the bad tank is full you don't get too much trouble from that.

My front tank has a leak. When I pull it to repair or replace it, can I drive on the rear tank with the front tank out? For instance, if I were gonna take a day or two to patch it up or something, can I still drive using the rear tank. thanks!

The lines have Y connectors in the lines - you'd have to use some sort of connector in place of where the tank was to connect the lines with the tank out.

You definitely can't drive with one tank removed. When one tank is being used the other tank has a valve inside that stops the fuel from being pumped in there. Removing the tank removes the valve and you basically have an open line for fuel to pour out of.

i still think pulling the bed is alot easier to work on the tanks, plus cheaper
