Default Clutch issues

Well a few months ago my clutch randomly started feeling strange. I checked the fluid and it was low so I added fluid and it felt good as new. Well today on my way to work I pressed the clutch in to shift and the pedal didn't come back up when I took my foot off it. I slid my foot behind it, forced it back up, and it was normal for a few miles but now it won't disengage at all. I was a little low on fluid so I topped it off but I still have no clutch. I'm assuming I have a leak somewhere but is this usually a big issue?

check the slave cylinder. its probably the cause of the leak. i wouldnt recommend driving it till you fix it. not good on the clutch or gears

If you check under the truck around the bell housing and you see brake fluid, chances are you blew the clutch slave out and it will need to be replaced.

That involves dropping the transmission down to replace it since its inside the bell housing.

Well I just dropped it off my buddies shop so I will dig a little deeper tomorrow. I started it in 2nd and just drove it there like that. The shop was literally a mile away. I didn't notice any fluid anywhere underneath but I will look harder once its on the lift. Thanks for the responses guys.

If it is the slave cylinder that went out, what brand do y'all recommend? My local napa has one in stock for around $75. Also what is the ballpark labor charge for something like this? Is there anything else that should be replaced while the tranny is dropped? The truck only has 65k miles

Its one of the unfortunate "advancements" ford made on these trucks. You have to remove the transmission to replace the slave. You don't want to put a crappy aftermarket in there, otherwise you'll be doing it again. I would recomended a motorctaft slave.

Since its such a crappy spot to get too your going to want to change the rear main seal. Get you clutch plate resurfaced and replace the clutch of it needs it.

Its not a bad job just a pita. I would use a tranny jack and a buddy.

Well my buddy just said it needs a slave and master. He recommended duralast because it is half the price of ford and has a lifetime warranty while ford I believe is only 30 days. With a clutch and everything I'm looking at $700.

NO NO NO!

You WILL be doing it again in 6 months!
Duralast! ----MADE IN CHINA
Half the cost for 1/5 of the quality. If you're planning on keeping the truck then by all means do it correctly. The labor involved in this is enough to warrant good parts...not DL china garbage!

At least get the Napa set. If you just change the slave most likely the master will fail shortly thereafter and vice versa...that has been my experience when learning the finer details about hydraulic clutch setups. Replace a $10.00 Cable and a steel lever with a $200 hydraulic setup! what a PITA! lol

Do what you want but don't say you were not warned.

5Rangers gave excellent advice...since you're already there, do it all! Pull the pressure plate, take it to a shop and have it resurfaced, buy a NEW clutch set(NOT DURALAST!!!!LOL) change the rear main and if it is leaking...change the oil pan gasket too! I've been down this road with EVERY vehicle I've ever owned with a manual trans. You save no money buy buying cheap parts in this particular case unless you are going to get rid of it! It's simply too labor intensive to do it half assed in my opinion.

Get a seal or 2, rent a tranny jack, resurface the plate, and call it a day, granted, Im being simplistic but it should be closer to 500 (genuine motorcraft slave and master) unless your gonna pay someone to do it.
