I'm not at home right now... not even in my home state. So I don't have the trouble codes that I wrote down. But from memory I am pretty sure it was 33.
Edit: Just confirmed it - it was 33. "EGR Valve opening not detected."

When I return home, I plan to take off the valve and try cleaning it. I just put it on the back burner because the truck IS running and I need to get the massive wrench to be able to take the valve off.

But are those symptoms common to a bad EGR valve? The idle surge, not being able to start the truck sometimes, and turning off while running? From the research I've read about the EGR valve, it makes sense to me. I am returning home tonight and will post back as soon as I am able to clean this stupid valve. It will be soon seeing as how I need this truck to MOVE in a week. lol

Even if you disconnect your battery, it should give you an "11" or "111" meaning "all systems pass". But I got nothing... meaning the ECU had been fried. Always try and do trouble codes first. Unfortunately for me, I decided to do this after I had replaced basically the whole ignition system.

But any help on my truck shutting off would be helpful. Thanks!
I also did not get any codes that's why I thought it would be the same problem. I was lucky. My dad has an F250 w/351 sitting behind the shop that doesn't run so I went ahead and pulled the computer out of it and it seems to have fixed the problem. Running good so far.

That, or the EGR regulator that activates the valve. Take the vac hose off the EGR at warm idle. Should be no Vac. take rpm up to 2K. Got Vac now? No other codes? The ECU is a possibility if it's randomly deciding to now trigger the injectors. Did you take the TFI in to be checked?

We bought a new EGR regulator just to make sure and we were still getting code 33. Plus, we tested the regulator with the Haynes manual tests and everything passed. We took it back to Advance and stuck the old one back on - nothing wrong with it.

I'll try the vacuum tests. I did the ones in the Haynes manual and again - pointing to EGR valve. And another ECU problem is the last thing I need to hear right now. lol

TFI is brand new.
