Default front end clunk with hubs locked

I locked in my hubs today and while still in 2wd I was hearing a clunking noise coming from the front. How can I go about diagnosing this?

Do the halfshafts in front have u joints, maybe those are bad and only noticeable when the hubs are locked?

Yes the axles have ujoints in them that only turn when in 4X or locked hubs. The Front diveline also turns in the same positions. When the hubs are unlocked the entire front axle is stationary. To check the ujoints turn the wheels and wiggle the joint in the spindle, any movement in the joint is bad, remember you have one on the drivers side and two on the passengers. The noise could also be caused by the front driveline. Checking this is similar to the front ujoints, some have the cv double ujoints by the transfer case most do not.

I checked all the u-joints and found the problem. The front driveshaft u-joint was bone dry and had a small chunk out of it. Replaced both joints and now its fine.

Its not too bad, pull the hub back off the bearing and pull the spindle, then you can remove the shaft and go at it like you would a regular u joint. ya may wanna clean the spindle up a bit and regrease the wheel bearings while its apart
