Firing Order
I have an 89 F150 302. I am ordering a cam for engine they need to know if 302 firing order or 351. I called Ford Dealership they had no clue. How do I find this out? Was there a particular year this changed? Please Help

the 351w and 302 HO share the same firing order. If it's the original motor it should be the run of the mill 302 firing order. I believe if you wanted an HO, or 351 cam you could use it, you would just have to change the firing order on your motor via the distributor. The only thing about the 302 HO is that it would probably be a roller cam which would require complete valve train update.

I've been through that as I've shopped for new longblocks vs. rebuild options... The older 302 is a flat tappet motor. The 302HO and 351 are a different firing order, and the HO is a roller - like Don said, the valvetrain won't match up. And if you go with the different firing order, aside from swapping plug wires, the fuel injectors need to be rewired to match.

85 was the first year for the h.o. mustangs, 89 was the first year for mass air mustangs though. But for our 2 generations (87-96) trucks, all non-mass air equipped trucks are batch fire so you wouldn't need to rewire the injectors, they fire 4 at a time. everyone was correct with the valve train, its not compatible with the h.o. stuff. BUT those speed density computers do not like any internal mods. I cam would caused you problems for sure, you need to swap over to mass air before you do a cam. That very problem runs right along with the mustang stuff i mentioned earlier.

Actually Competition Cams builds a cam for speed density sysytems but i need to know if it is 302 firing order or 351 firing order they build a cam for both. I was also told that the orange tiped fel injectors is an indicator that it is a 302 HO engine (not sure if this is correct or not).
