Default Fan bearing?

Whats up everyone. Im kinda new to the whole truck/4x4 world. I just got rid of my 12 second 85 mustang gt that was putting holes in my wallet left and right. So i have some prior 5.0 knowledge. I now have an '88 F-150 Custom 4x4. My issue is with the fan. When the motor is running it sounds like the fan is banging and clanking all around. One of my buddies who has had a few lifted 150's said it sounds like a fan bearing. I was wondering if anyone on here had had fan problems in the past and if that is a common problem. The other question is to anyone who has done this replacement before, what exactly does it require. I would assume it is very easy to fix but i have assumed that in the past and was very wrong!

Might be the thermostatic clutch. Given the age and the assumed proportional mileage for your truck, not unreasonable for a failure, although I wouldn't classify it as a 'common problem'. Stuff does get old and wear out.

With the motor off, give the fan a spin and have a listen and a look. Shouldn't rotate freely, perhaps on the order of 1 turn or so before stopping. Also, try to wobble it to check for any free play.

Shouldn't take any more than standard wrenches. Will likely have to undo the fan shroud to get adequate clearance.

Thanks guys i got it figured out today. The bearing was totally shot so i took the assembly off the front of the water pump and replaced it with a flex-fan i had laying around from a past project and that fixed the problem.

One of the sweetest things you can do is install an electric water pump along with an electric fan. Being able to circulate coolent throught the engine when it is not running after a long highway trip in really hot weather is really nice.
