Default f150 to ranger

just had a question, maybe you guys can help me out. i went and looked at a 99 ranger reg cab short bed 2.5 5spd with 101k miles, i got the guy down to $1800 but it has a few issues. needs tires, check engine and abs light are on but dont know what the codes are, temp gauge dont move off cold, rear window leaks, tail gate dont work (latch is broken). just wondered if it would be something to look into in place of my f150

If it were me, at the least i would check the codes, figure out how much money you're going to have to put into it, if they have a problem with getting the codes ran, walk away

whats wrong with the f150? You're gonna put out 1800, plus tax, titles, fees, insurance, then fix everything. tires = 400. temp sender = 5 bux (but could have overheating problems that you wouldn't necessarily know about). Codes (need I explain the problems that could cause?). Leaking rear window at the very least is going to have an annoying mildew smell. Fixing it could prove expense, but you really didn't specify why it was leaking.

Like I said I don't know what's wrong with the f150, but I'd say the money is better spent elsewhere. Its a 99 with over 100k, small engine, 5 speed (new clutch soon?). I don't like it, but that's just me.

nothing wrong with the f150 that i got i just have to fix the brakes on it. i was just looking for a better fuel mileage and with a ranger there is more to do as far as lowering and stuff like that. plus i was doing some hunting on the net and was really interested in putting a turbo on a 2.5l. there is not much that i can do with the f150 that i got now, 95 f150 4.9l 5spd 137k miles 2 wheel drive. i wouldnt mind lowering my truck but dont want to buy drop beams....too expensive. but after thinking about it i dont think i a going to buy the ranger anyways

Ah, you're a project man like myself. I thought you were going for practicality, which wouldn't make much sense, besides the better gas mileage. But I understand better now. Still don't like it even for a project considering the price. You can find better.

i chose to stick with my f150 for now, still dont know what i what to do with the truck as far as lowering it. i think i should find something else that is easier to lower. i love lowered trucks, i had a silverado that i lowered and absolutely loved it. unless someone has a set of drop beams that they want to sell me real cheap....lol. i really dont want to give up on my truck right now cause i like the durability of the 4.9, plus i have a bug up my *** on taking the motor and trans out of my truck and doing a rat rod project with the 4.9, but its a idea at the moment.

well I guess you decided not to get it and stick with the f150...but for future use, what are you using the truck for? would a ranger be able to do that well enough

i dont use my truck for anything. i just use it to drive to work and back, and when i am not at work the truck just sits unless i need it to haul something. a ranger would be suitable for my needs but everyone wants an arm and a leg for something with a million miles and its not worth it. that truck i looked at needed alot of work and it was full of mud, like it sat in water for a while. i will have to just keep my eyes open

Couldn't agree more. My 87' 302 A/T got 9 mpg & would only do 65 mph downhill, when I got it in Oregon & drove it back to Ca. (expensive trip/ 90 gals.@ $3.90-$4.20/gal. at the time). I spent about $400, on upgrading (including switching all fluids to synthetic) & minor mods. I now get 23mpg @ 65mph & 19mpg @ 80mph.
Turboing that little Ranger engine is a can of worms better left unopened if you intended it as a daily driver

well if i could figure out how to get 23mpg with my f150 i wouldnt want to bail on it. right no i am averaging 15.5mpg. so thats why a ranger is in my eyesight. besides i have only had my f150 for only like 3 months. i paid $1800 for it and it had 136k miles on it. if there is someone near northwest ohio, southeast michigan that could help me figure out how to get better mileage i would keep old blue, or find a way to get inside the computer to change the parameters. let me know
