engine specs
I'm looking for the power (Tq and HP @ RPM) for the 302 and 300. I've heard that the 300 has more torque, but I'd like to see what the actual numbers are. Does anybody have the power specs for any year in the 90-96 range?
Also, is there any dif in the longevity of the two motors?

There is a bunch of information there. But, it doesn't have what I'm looking for. I want to know peak HP RPM and peak torque RPM. I also note that the power of the 300 went down w/the new head.

From the handy-dandy Chilton's manual covering '87-'91 only - all in SAE net values
1987 4.9L EFI - 120 hp at 3200 rpm, 245 lbft at 1600 rpm
1988-91 4.9L EFI - 150 hp at 3400 rpm, 265 lbft at 2000 rpm
1987 5.0L EFI - 170 hp at 3800rpm, 275 lbft at 2800 rpm
1987 5.0L 4BBL - 225 hp at 3600rpm, 280 lbft at 2800 rpm
1988-91 5.0L EFI - 185 hp at 3800 rpm, 270 lbft at 2400 rpm
1987 5.8L 4BBL - 210 hp at 4000 rpm, 305 lbft at 2800 rpm
1988-91 5.8L EFI - 210 hp at 3800 rpm, 315 lbft at 2800 rpm

185 HP and 270 ft/lbs of torque stock. But on a chassis dyno don't expect more than 150-155 HP at the wheels.

For the record: I would rather have the 5.8L / 351W engine.

The 4.9L EFI / Straight Six / I6 / 300ci got a boost in output and fuel mileage with the addition of multi-port electronic fuel injection in
1987 instead of a one-barrel carburetor.
This change resulted in output of 145 horsepower @ 3,400 rpm
and 265 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm.
The compression ratio was raised to 8.8
1994-1996 F-150
The last version of the 4.9-liter six, before it was discontinued,
got another slight bump in output to 150 horsepower at 3,400 rpm
and a slightly lower torque output of 260 foot-pounds at 2,000 rpm.
1996 was the last year the inline six-cylinder engine powered a F-150.

The difference in pulling between the 302 & the 300 is the 4.9L does it at a lower RPM.
The 5.0's RPM has to be higher to produce the torque to pull the same load.
But, the 302 sounds better with dual muffler exhaust pipes out the back,
and gets better fuel mileage and will out run the 4.9L on top end.
Many 1987-96 F-150's have the 4.9L EFI engine because it was
Standard Equipment, the 5.0L & 5.8L had to be ordered as an option.
The Automatic transmission was an option also.

My puzzlement is why the 1987 5.0L carbureted version rated at higher horsepower than the 1987 5.8L carbureted version - something serious, or merely a Chilton's typo?
Heard a rumor once (keep in mind, only a rumor) - that Ford offered the 5.8 upgrade to the 5.0 solely to meet emissions standards of the time. Hmmm, was the 5.0L the sleeper dirty bad boy that year? :-)
