E4OD or torque converter
Hi All
I have a 92 F-150 4WD w/5.7 and E4OD tranny at 260,000 miles
I have had some random harsh shifts over the past few years but that has been my only trans problem indications until recently.
When getting above 40 mph or so there is a low frequency vibration in the drivetrain that feels as though the transfer case is engaged or the driveline is wobbly.
The symptoms seem to disappear after a short hesitation when I let up on the throttle and coast as though the vibration is only occurring when the torque converter is locked up and quits when it starts to freewheel
I do get random on/off of the check engine and ABS brake lights[and have long before current symptoms]
I have been under the truck and ujoints seem good [ie not rattly] and front driveline turns freely and quietly.
I have changed tranny fluid and filter every 50k or so and tranny fluid level is good.
I have seen some references to VSS and MLPS malfunction causing lights and related symptoms but I am curious if it is more likely a worn out torque converter? I do some towing but not regularly.
Any opinions or diagnoses short of throwing parts at it? Should I attempt to replace the torque converter without rebuilding transmission?
Thanks in advance B
