Default E40D s 4R70 auto transmission

My 1994 5.0l F150 originally had a 4R70 transmission (right?) and per the previous owner this was replaced "with a newer better " transmission.

So my question is how do I differentiate between the two and confirm what auto transmission I have?

Thanx Mike

Count the bolts on the pan.

20 on the E4OD

12 on the AOD

(I think - I have a 5-speed so google might be your best friend))

Well then I have the E40D. What are the differences or why/is the E40D better?

I don't think the 4R70 existed when your truck was built. I'll do a little homework, but I think the E4OD was in use in 1994.
Edit-- did a little homework and I was wr... wro... I was mistaken. The 4R70 was introduced in 1993. From what I could find, the E4OD was designed to handle more torque and is considered a more robust trans.

The E40D is better suited for HD/Towing applications. Being all electric, it can sometimes get a little picky. Just keep it regularly serviced and don't overheat it and it'll last you a while.

Early (92) E4OD's had a lot of issues which were slowly resolved each year. 94 is pretty good, 96 is the best.
A lot of 4x4's came with E4OD but 4R70w is pretty common in the 2WD models.

Check your door post sticker for original equipment - trans code E is E4OD, U is 4R70W

Mine is trans code U, so it was originally a 4R70 & now an E40D. Previous owner did say it was replaced with a "more modern" transmission.
