Not long ago I rolled the 200,000mi mark. I would like to do a full service on my my tranny, rather than just dropping the pan. How do you go about draining the converter and re-filling it? I have a 95 f150 4x4 5.8L and E40D trans. Thanks

you can't refill the converter without taking it out. to drain it though, if it's drainable, you'll have to rotate it while looking for a plug either on the face of the converter, or on the side. There should be a dust shield you'll have to remove from the bottom of the bell housing, and there should also be a plastic plug on the bottom of the bell. if there is a drain plug on the side of the converter, you'll need to access through the hole by removing the plastic plug. When you refill, DO NOT add more than 5 quarts at first. Too much fluid on start up could potentially blow out the front seal.

If it's the E4OD you'll need atleast a case of fluid, but after draing the converter probably a case and a half. Have someone start the truck and begin adding fluid immediately. Your first five quarts will go strait to the converter. Keep going til you get 10 in then re check the level after cycling the shift through all the positions a few times.

To be honest, it's usually worth it to pay the $200 and have a trans shop do it. They won't just do a drain and fill, they'll actually flush it which in turn replaces all of the fluid, not just what drains out. The transmission, line, and cooler will usually hold a couple of quarts that you'll never be able to get out without a flushing machine. Plus dropping the pan makes a friggin mess!

Thanks for the heads-up. Sounds like a flush is the way to go. Thought I'd save some $$$$ by doing it myself. I'm fully capable just have never done one and was hoping to get some direction. And now I'm on my way.............to the shop to get it done. Thanks again.

with a flush you are assured that every ounce of old fluid is drained and that you are completely topped off with fresh fluid you cant go wrong bud and no problem

If you're doing a complete flush & fill, it would be a perfect time to go with synthetic fluid. I recently did that and it was like night and day!

Synthetic is all I run in everything. Truck, car, bike, quad, sled, lawnmower ect. My father-in-law is an Amsoil dealer. I get all I want in exchange for promoting Amsoil and getting him customers.

LOL!!! And you've been just waiting to throw that out there Huhh. Damn, tell him to send me some of that stuff then, I will advertise everyday for him. I will even put a big ole fat Amsoil sticker on the side of my company truck and wave at everybody!!
