Default Distributor Firing order trouble

I bought a 1984 F-150 with a 302 and it was running a bit rough so I changed the plugs and wires.. It was still running rough so I went to autozone.com and double checked the firing order. Well I found that it should be 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 and mine was different, so I changed it like so. Now it will not even start, it just back fires when I crank on it. I see number one on the distributor cap and even got a picture diagram so I know it is correct.. Can anyone tell me a sure fire way of making sure, or any ideas on this? Thanks

You have two different 302 firing orders standard is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. 302 HO is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.
Yours should be the first one unless someone has swapped motors or put in a HO cam.
You may have to get #1 back on TDC on the compression stroke and see where the rotor is pointing someone might have pulled the dist and not got it back in right.

Gonna be the same regardless of firing order.

That's pretty much it. 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 is stock. An HO cam would want 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.

Something you're not telling us...like a distributor swap?

You can't pin a rough idle on the sole possibility of bad wires.

Let's see... the wires were on right and you changed it and now the truck doesn't run? I wonder what's wrong?

Take all of your wires off and start over again. Also, make sure you know the number of each cylinder you're routing the wire to.

Beware -- Ford cylinders are numbered differently than Chevy.

And here I was thinking they were numbered 1-8 too, only in different locations what numbers are they using now?? Lol

Your right Chevy are odds on one side evens on the other,Fords are 1,2,3,4 on one 5,6,7,8 on the other.

I am new to this forum so please forgive me if this is a double post on the subject. I have the exact same problem that the gentleman that started this post had. My 1984 F150 with a 302 that I just bought was skipping as I drove it home. I looked at the plug wires and they were a jumbled mess. I traced a couple and noticed that the firing order was "wrong" according to the manual and the information given here. I put the wires in the "correct" order, now the truck won't start at all. I don't know the location that they came from because I thought they were wrong, so I can't put them back like they were.

The truck cranked fine but ran rough before. It won't start at all now. It just turns over and spits back through the carb. I didn't change anything other than the plug wires. What do I do now?

THanks.

How was this problem solved by the gentleman here?

Find top dead center for #1 and redo the wires.
