Default Diagnostic codes: misfire + too rich

I have a '96 with 5.0 liter.

I went to have the emissions checked and the computer shows two codes:

P0307: Cylinder 7 Misfire detected
P0175: Sys too Rich (Bank 2)

Of course my speed sensor failed too, but I already know how to fix that.

Any advice on the two codes above? Could the second be because of the first? I just put new plugs in last weekend. I have no idea when the Cylinder misfire occurred, but the engine appears to be running very smoothly.

On a somewhat related issue, my check engine light no longer works. Before I tear into the dash does anyone have any suggestions for that too?

I tore into the dash and sure enough, I need bulbs.

I'm more concerned about the mis-fire and rich condition. I would appreciate some advice on what could cause it.

I am assuming that cylinder #7 isn't firing which is putting unburned fuel into the exhaust causing the system too rich code. Just have to figure out why #7 isn't firing.

I was thinking the same thing. Is there a common cause for misfires? Bad plugs, wrong gap, plug wires not connected correctly, distributor in bad condition?

How can I tell if I'm getting spark at the plug? (without electrocuting myself)

Too many questions, and a long weekend ahead.

Yes, check all those things. To check for spark, pull that wire off at the spark plug. Put a screwdriver in the end and place the screwdriver near a ground about 1/4" from the metal. Crank the motor and watch for spark to jump from the screwdriver to the metal.

You can p/u a spark tester that plugs in between the plug and the plug wire for @ $10. It's see-thru so you can observe the spark intensity & compare it with the other plug firings. Pull the plug and check for contamination of tip & electrode, incorrect gapping and hairline fracture of insulator. If seems ok, switch #7 plug w/ different cylnder & #7 wire w/another different cylinder. Disconnect battery for 20-30 mins. to clear your KOER & Continuous Memory Stored Codes. then go for a ride and see what it has to say for itself. Separation of variables for elimination as cause. Also pop the dist. cap, look for corrosion of point contacts & worn rotor contact
