Post Code 64

I was driving to pick up my girlfriends sister and my truck died, luckily I wasn't far from home and a neighbor pulled me back. Did a self check it read code 64 which I looked up in the book and it says ACT sensor grounded or input reads 254deg. Was wondering if this happens when they go bad or if there is a bigger issue.

Probably a bad sensor.

I'm hoping so was planning on moving back to MN next month so I don't want to risk being stranded. Going to buy a new sensor tomorrow and hopefully that'll fix it. If that sensor was going bad do you think it would account for a high idle?

It's possible but probably not. When my truck idles high I turn the key off and back on real quick without letting it stall. This resets the IAC and brings the idle back down. It's not really a test but works for me.

The ACT gets power from the computer and gives the computer a ground signal to read air temperature. That is why I think the sensor is bad, the computer is only getting a full ground signal.

I was going to replace the IAC at one point but when I took the old one off it was still working fine. The truck idles fine when it's in gear (only about 200rpm over what is suppose to(1,000rpm)), it's just when it's in park and neutral that it idles high(1000-1500rpm).

I talked to a mechanic and he said that the sensor probably wouldn't shut down my truck and to start looking at other things. Any ideas where I should start?

Well talked to two other mechanics and they both said that sensor would for sure shut down the engine. I changed it (took all of 5 minutes) and what do you know it runs better then it did before, so hopefully my gas mileage will go up too. Mechanics also said that they go out slowly so maybe huh....

Thanks just call me sean for the help really appreciate it.
