Clutch master cylinder strangeness

Clutch master cylinder strangeness
The first symptom was a clunk when I depressed the clutch pedal. Investigation revealed that the nylon bushing between the short lever actuated by the clutch pedal and the master cylinder shaft was worn, so I replaced it, at nearly $10 (!!) from Ford. However, a couple of shifts later, the clunking returned. Further investigation revealed that the rear of the master cylinder is (was) deflecting to the right when the pedal was depressed, causing the shaft to move nearly free from the lever. Disconcerting for sure, especially out in the middle of nowhere, as I was. (Am I making sense ... this is hard to explain?) The master cylinder is attached to the firewall quite solidly, even if the back of the cylinder seems loose. My temporary solution was to fabricate an authentic Ford Motorcraft cedar shim which, together with a wire tie, prevents the deflection of the cylinder. I'm hoping that one among you who has removed the master cylinder on an F-150 might be able to describe what is broken. The rig shifts easily and no fluid is leaking.
