Default Changing fan clutch. 302

How do you remove the fan clutch on a 88. Never done one before. First off how do you tell if its bad. When i first start the truck it has a loud rattle sound for about 2 seconds then goes away and then when you give it some gas it sounds like a helicopter. Idk if thats the clutch or something else but its a real loud rattle shaky sound. And next will one from a i6 work on it or are they different.

When you spin the clutch fan it should just have a little resistance to spin it and feel smooth. If it keeps spinning on it own its bad, if its very difficult or rough to spin its bad. Its right hand thread to remove the nut using either the special wrench set you can buy at most parts stores for cheap, or using the air hammer attachment like I use to break them loose.

have someone turn the truck off for you while you watch your fan if it still keeps spinning after you kill the truck then its bad and ive done it idk how man times with out a special tool even tho it might make it easier the worse part is putting it back on for me because you gotta align the bolts up and theres not much room to get your hands in there its not that bad of a job pretty straight forward

I thought you only needed the special tool for the I6, am I wrong? I just did my 351 and it was as simple as 4 size 11mm bolts. I could have darn the 302 was the same.

Did mine on my 92 302 a few months back. Just had to remove it from the water pump. Only pain was working around my shroud which wraps all the way around. Also had to apply tension to the belt to keep it from spinning when I tried to turn the bolts. Got all but 3 bolts by myself and had to have someone else hold everything in place while I removed the last bolt. Hopefully your bolts won't be as hard as mine to remove!

Alright i checked it and seems to have a bit of resistance. I can spin it by hand but when i let go it pretty much stops.
