Default Cant get distributor back in...tricks?

OK so I had to replace the ignition control module on my truck. I removed the distributor in doing so as I had to drill out one of the broken screws. Now I'm trying to get the distributor back in, I marked its position and it just wont line up properly. Does anyone know any tricks to doing this? I have about 3hrs into trying to get this distributor back in and ready to give up. Please help.

check to see if your oil pump came up and the clip is sticking up too high which is blocking the dist. from going back in.

just a thought that i've encountered before..

how i fixed it was getting the longest ratchet extension i have ( do not link shorter extensions because you might loose one to the motor ) and push down and if the oil pump goes down, that was your problem. or, you could get a flashlight and look down in the hole and see if it's moved a little bit.

OK when I look in the hole, all i see is a small tab thats notched out in a 1/2 circle and below that is the gear that the distributor meshes with. What would I be pushing down on exactly, that tab?

So it seems the oil pump shaft is down but its not centered in the hole. I cant get the bottom of the distributor shaft to line up with the top of the oil pump shaft as its pressed against the side of the housing. No idea what to do now. Tried cranking the key quickly to try and get the shaft to pop up so I can get on it a little easier but that did nothing to the oil pump shaft. Suggestions?? Craigslist and the junk yard are looking like to viable options :-(

Did you say you cranked the motor over with the distributor out?

Yeah, 2 times really quick. Finally got distributor back in and everything back together and still wont start. It was starting with an ignition bypass box and wont even do that anymore.

What originally happened was the truck died on me. I figured out it wasnt getting spark. Changed the coil and could run it fine with an ignition bypass box. Then I changed the ignition control module. When I got everything back together, it still wouldnt start, even with the ignition bypass box. I have no idea what to do now. HELP!

check top dead center, when you got the distr. back in, it may have not lined up in the same gear teeth...
