I am ordering all new fluids for the new woman in my life and have found a matching Valvoline Max Life DEX/MERC and dont know if that will suffice for the transmission fluid. I love Valvoline and have always used it but I'm not sure to go with that or the blue bottle of ATF+4 full synthetic.

I also saw on another thread that guys are using transmission fluid for the power steering? I do have a leak in what I believe is an O-ring at a high pressure hose on the power steering pump. I plan on pulling the PS pump and doing a new gasket and O-ring kit so I will get to start fresh with something good and im not sure what to run with.

I've used type F transmission fluid for all of my old truck's power steering systems. I flushed it out with type F first since I didn't know what they had in there. Worked just fine.

ATF+4 will work in the PS pump (really any trans fluid will) but I would recommend against putting it in the tranny itself. Merc IV or V is what I would go with.

Mercon V it is. I am 45 minutes from the nearest autoparts store (Glorious Ft. Irwin) so Amazon Prime is my go to.

Would you guys recommend LubeGuard? The reviews are stupid high but I have no idea how this transmission has been run other than it shifts into every gear without hesitation when cold and I didn't feel a single shutter from it when driving. Dash says 78k so I'm assuming its rolled over at least once. Not sure if adding extra lube in there will hurt or help.

1991 should have a space for a 6th digit so if it says 78 that's what it probably is (or it would say 178). Where you are it should be miles not k (kilometers) ?
Anyway that's pretty low mileage if it's correct.

Well, buy a rust free 1991 with 81k on the dash and you get what you pay for. Someone did some redneck engineering that will take some work to undo. So far, the heater core has been bypassed, the power steering pump is in terrible shape. The PS has been leaking fluid onto the control arms and bushings under the truck and they are eaten up and softer than justin beiber. The brake fluid reservoir cap is the wrong fit and barely stays on and the coffee can vaccum behind the battery has had all the lines cut. The radiator has a small leak but I cant find it. But damn if it doesn't have rockford fosgate speakers throughout. Couple hundred bucks and I will be in business.

Pretty minor stuff to fix on an old truck really. If you buy right, the 400 you saved should just about cover it. Really if that's the worst of it you're in pretty good shape. I think you got a good deal from the sounds of it.

Don't think '91 has 6 digits, pretty sure that happened in '92 when the new generation was introduced. Run a Carfax on the truck, it may help you determine how many times it rolled over.

My 91 only has 5 slots and tenths. Convinced its seen at least one roll over.

Well Gents I have been busy under the hood for three weeks. New vacuum lines, new heater core, new junkyard radiator and lines, and I was able to fix the steering slop with an 8 dollar steering arm off a junkyard Bronco. I also got that steering gear box leak to stop, whoever tried to to replace the last high pressure line cross threaded the aluminum fitting into the steel pump, duh, all the stop leak in the world couldn't help it so I just replaced the entire line and flushed with type F and refilled. I did add some grabber 31x10.50s and I just ordered a 2.5 inch front spacer to bring the stance up. Really happy at how everything is coming along. I am seriously considering going to two bronco bucket seats in the cab and trying my hand at fiberglass resin on a custom 10" sub box in between but that is a project for next spring. Getting chilly here in southern Cali. Here she is with the new tires.
