Default What's up with this tranny?

So in the past week or so, my truck has been really erratic with it's shifting. For the past 2 months before this it's been fine since I changed the U-joints. Before that I'd get the occassional harsh shift.

Now, damn near 75% of my 1-2 shifts are bone jarring and tool box rattling, and the other gears are all hit or miss on whether or not it'll be smooth or not. The most consistently bad shift is the 1-2. It's just suddenly come into happening, and I have no clue why. Trans was fully serviced 12k miles ago, new fluids and filter.

Also, the torque converter doesn't like to lock up before the truck is warmed up either most of the time. That symptom is just since November.

What would any of you geniuses say about this? I hope it's something simple and not requiring a rebuild of this transmission, I'm on a shoestring college budget.

Truck is a '91, 300/E4OD, with 173,500 miles

Mine randomly started shifting hard one day. Like make me hit the steering wheel hard. And I had a blown fuse and got the voltage meter out and I was getting 1.5 volts backwards in a fuse(still am). I lost my speedo only. And my 4wd lights would be on the dash but not the button, and it wasn't engaged.

Tracked the wire that was back feeding. Ended up tearing the dash out completely(first time I went to a forum for help) and tracked it all the way over to a control module on the passenger side next to the door.

Swapped that out. Still back feeds about 0.6 volts but everything works fine.

Just thought I'd give you some more ideas of where to look.

I'll check the fuses tonight. I don't have a volt meter but maybe it's just the fuse. Everything else on the truck is working perfectly.

Is that control module behind the dash, by the door? Is it reachable from behind the glove box?

Remove the kick panel. If you sit in the passenger seat. The plastic next to your left foot.

I think you mean right foot? Left foot would be the one on the trans hump.

Kick panel removal is easy, so I'll get started into seeing what's up over there. Heading out now to check fuses

If you've got manual 4x4 check to make sure its all the way in 2wheel drive or whatever i bumped mine a little one time on my 91 bronco and it started shifting hard all of a sudden.

My E4OD had this same problem a year ago when I first got it. My dad had this truck before me and said it was the solenoid pack bolted to the transmission from inside just above the pan when you take it off. Luckily he had a new one from Ford and never had time to install it, so I installed it and reset the computer. Hard shifting solved. Also had the problem again a few months later and turned out to be the egr position sensor ironically, and that fixed it again. Hope this gives you some ideas! Btw mines a 95 4.9 E4OD with 300,000+ miles.
