blown head gasket?
hey,
i have a 94 4.9l efi 5spd 4x4 that seems to be burning coolent and the mpg has decreased. i was thinking that the head gasket must be blown. also the rear main bearing knocks a little at idle.
i have a few options and could use some options.
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

- i could rebuild that engine for around 2500.00, but i never really liked the power from that engine.
- i could buy a parts truck and change over to a 93 5.0l efi. with 170k and needs a new water pump.
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

$2500 to rebuild or for rebuilt? If you go with the donor truck w\302, do not forget to take the frame mounts for the 302, and if the truck is cheap enough I would go with the 302. The 302 eng. will bolt up to the -6 trans, they are the same.

local machine shop quoted 2200-2500 and jbsautomachine.com quoted 2800.00. the 93 donor truck is 650.00. but with an unknown engine.
if i went with a 5.8l then i would need a different trans?

I love my 93 f150, but I don't think u should downgrade. You would be giving up your sequential injection and MAF sensor on the air cleaner intake. From what I have read on this site, thats an automatic 2-4 MPG loss you would have. A lot of work just to surrender power and fuel economy. Did you ever scan for stored codes to see if there were any failing sensors? I have systems pass (code 11), but Engine running brought up a power steering pressure switch error (stuck open). Little things like that waste gas. What was your mpg average
