Hey all -
Sorry this took me a couple days to post. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
Truck got fixed yesterday. After lots of time, effort and too much money, figured out the problem...
To make a long, painful, and embarrassing story a little shorter, here are the high points:
*Pulled injectors - cleaned them - then ruined an o-ring getting them back in and set the engine on fire. Fortunately, had an extinguisher there.
*Rebuilt melted vacuum system - wires were all okay still.
No change in missing cylinders.
*Checked fuel pressure - 20psi. Low. Replaced fuel pump. Increased the throttle response - but still missing.
*Replaced Idle Air Control valve, sensor on top of EGR valve (DPFE?), ignition module on distrib, plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor. No change (well, a little change, but didn't solve the misfires).
Went to Ford dealership - they recommended I replace the Stator module in Distrib - Luckily for me (and that's all it was - luck) as I was pulling out of the parking lot, the engine suddenly ran smoothly for about a second - did this twice before going back to its stuttering. At this point I figured it had to be wiring.
After lots of wiggling in engine compartment, finally found it. One (of 4) connector for the engine harness was about a millimeter disconnected - that was all it took.
Ugh. Well, at least it's fixed. I got some of the parts from a buddy's 91 van, so that helped, but I still spent about $400-500.
There is a piece of good news though...
Got to talking with John at Ford fleet servicing here in Reno - good guy. They had just pulled a 351 Windsor out of a 91 Bronco. Had been well maintained. I told him I was looking to restore an old Mustang - so they asked if I wanted the motor? I guess the sun even shines on a dog's a** some days. So now I have a motor.
Thanks again all - this one had me stumped.
