Default 1996 F-150 Transmission Replace

Hey all, I've been on the forum here randomly when I need some help with my truck. Its time I believe to replace the transmission. I do not have $2000 to have it done and I don't care to pay anyone else to it. So...how hard is this? I rebuild muscle cars and such so I know my way around a car but specifically with a 96 f150...? I want to put the truck on jack stands and just drop the tranny out the bottom cause I'd rather not pull the motor and all. Is that the best way to go about this? And where the hell do I find a semi nice rebuilt transmission for like $400 or $500 bucks? Is that reasonable or am I dreaming hoping to only pay $400...? Any help at all is awesome. Thanks guys!!!

if you rebuild muscle cars you should know how to remove a transmission dude. I'm just getting in the mechanics business and know how to remove a transmission from most cars trucks are way easier hell if you are really in a pinch i bet i could remove the trans without my truck on jack stands

the best thing to do as far as a transmission is to ether buy a remanufactured at napa or some parts store or get one from the bone yard and rebuild it. it worries me that you work with Mucle cars and can't even drop a simple trans from a 15 year old truck using the same engine as some 70s mustangs and other cars.
