fresh tranny fluid fixes problem
I dumped out the tranny fluid out of the transmission and transfer case and it was the worst I've seen. It was black like well used motor oil, some clumps, and a metallic sheen. The drain plug was gummed with a graphite like sludge and with some metal deposits. Put in fresh fluid in both and it shifted fine at all operating temps. Also, I verified the shift bushings are worn with a 1/4 " of side to side play when in gear. If I decide to keep the truck, I will fix this later after working out some other kinks.

i just want to say im a new member and this is my first post, but ive been lurking the forum for a few months now. im amazed by all of the really good information here. great job guys. i have this exact same problem only the guy that sold me the truck said it takes 30W motor oil in the transmission, i havent had it long and havent put any fluid in it. dude also said i need some sort of pump to get fluid into transmission. how do i go aobut doing this? truck has 225k but supposedly the transmission was rebuilt sometime within the past 3-4 years, which was his reasoning for running 30w mottor oil in the transmission. has anyone else heard of this? help me out please, thanks in advance

If your tranny is the 5 speed then it will take Dextron/Mercon III fluid. If he told you it takes motor oil he is wrong. I don't know of any that take motor oil, although some of the 4 speeds take gear oil. Do not put motor oil or gear oil in a transmission that requires Dextron/Mercon III unless you feel like rebuilding it soon because it will be destroyed.
I didn't use a pump for mine. I have some extra tops that come on gear oil bottles, the ones with the tip on them. I screw the gear oil tip to the automatic transmission fluid bottle, cut the tip and slip a piece of vacuum hose on it. With my finger on the vacuum hose I raise the bottle higher than the fill hole, then quickly shove the vacuum hose into the fill hole.

sorry, i didnt realize all the stuff it asked me about my truck wouldnt show up in my post. its a 5.0L 1995 xlt 4x4 shortcab longbed with 32"x11.5" wild country rvt's. the guys name is ted and ted told me hes already put motor oil in it and has been since he got the transmission rebuilt, which could have been a lie because he lied about a lot of things. im not saying youre wrong because ive read a lot i mean LOT of your posts since ive been lurking and it seems like you really know your stuff and was actually hopeing you would respond, but my only question is why would he tell me to break a truck i just bought from him. and my friend just bought a 94 ranger from a totaly different guy and he said his tranny was rebuilt and the dude who sold him his truck said it also takes 30w motor oil in the transmission. could we be mistaking this for 30w gear oil? i know i sound like a complete idiot, its because i am. thanks for your help

Nope its dexcron. Seans right. Its just the way it is. We all get confused at one point and time in our own auto learning voyage (once put 6 quarts in a 91 integra, thought you were supposed to fill till the oil cap hole was filled lol wow how ive learned.)
