This is a 1996 f150, 5.0L, manual 5 speed. When the truck is run cold before coming up to normal operating temperature, the transmission shifts smooth through all gears. When the temp. is normal, I get hard shifting especially between 1st and 2nd. Any tips on what causes this? Is it vacuum related?
Wondering if your clutch is not fully disengaging? Not aware of any vacuum components on a manual tranny, but I'm not really up to date on the newer stuff.
There are no transmission fluid leaks at all. The clutch resoivoir is full. The truck has 200k and I see from the svc. records the clutch was replaced including clutch kit and pressure plate at 160k. When you let the clutch pedal out it engages normally and well before the pedal is fully released.
Make sure the tranny is full of fluid, it takes Dextron/Mercon III. The shifter bushings are probably worn out and will cause hard shifting. With the shifter in gear there should be minimal side to side play.

I just read this and now I am confused. Dextron/Mercon III in a manual. Isn't this an automatic fluid.I thought manuals took a heavier fluid like 80W. Please set me straight, because I was going to go get some fluid TODAY and top mine off since I have a hard shifting from 1st to 2nd.(1996 F-150 4.9/5 speed manual.
