I guess you have figured out that you do have the OBD-II.

That code relates to the EGR valve, I believe. The price for the EGR valve is gonna run you about $150, maybe less if you can find it on sale. I just checked Rockauto.com and they have them on closeout/sale for $46 to $130. You should be able to do the work yourself, get yourself a Chilton's or Haynes repair manual, they will help you with removal/installation instructions.

Good luck.

A code P0402 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
  • The DPFE (differential pressure) sensor is faulty and needs to be replaced
  • There is a blockage in the EGR (most likely carbon buildup)
  • The EGR valve is faulty
  • The EGR valve may not be opening due to a lack of vaccuum

How do I determine if its the DPFE or the egr valve? Will I damge truck or hurt my mpg's if I ignore it or keep resetting codes. It was fine until it went to nat'l budget for inspection. Got about 35 miles before it reset after clearing last night.

Thanks advance for any/all replies

Found both parts for truck egr valve $50-90, other part about $50. I believe advance had an egr for $50, may be mistaken.

The ECU will reset after a few on/off cycles if it doesn't detect the code again. It will still be stored, just won't trip the CEL. The next time it senses the issue, it will throw a code again.
