You said the engine cranks when you bridge the solenoid?

Same thing happened with my 89 6 cyl. Changed everything and ended up being the starter. Fairly easy swap (except the top bolt on the 4.9). The 4.9 is a very torquey engine so any "weakness" in the starter caused it to only try to turn over or not do anything at all. Rebuilt starter runs about 90.00 and has at least a 12 month warranty.

As a matter of fact, just take the starter off and take it to one of the chain parts stores and have them test it. If it passes, then you probably have a bad solenoid.

Default 4.9L Automatic Transmission Starter

New Lifetime Warranty Remy Starter (# 97132) for my 4.9L from Advance Auto Parts cost $89.99 plus tax last week. (09/10)

Advance Auto Parts only keeps the warranty information on their computers for 3 years, so I made a copy of my receipt, because usually the original receipt will fade out in a few years.

I used a ratchet with a 1/2" socket and a long extension to remove & tighten the top bolt on my starter; but my 4WD truck is lifted 4" with long radius arms...
