Welcome to this site. As far as i know cutting off converter will only hurt your emission. But i think that it's better to start with mantainance before cutting anything off your truck. Read the error codes. Replace filters, ignition plugs and fluids. Clean MAF sensor. Check tires pressure.

it has a fresh tune up plugs, wires, fluids, air/oil/transmission filters new maf sensor a couple of months ago and tires are inflated to 36 psi, the truck has been in the family for quite a while and it has never got much mpg i've cut the converter off a couple of rangers and they have gained fuel mileage i was just curious if it would help mileage or not on this truck.
i had a 93 f-150 with a 302 and i had the converter removed and replaced with a high flow converter and it killed the fuel mileage but it still got about 14 mpg and this is an inline 300 6 cyl so i expected it to atleast get as good as a V8

Cutting off the converter won't hurt mileage, it should help it. The truck won't pass smog inspection with it removed, and even if you don't have inspections here a cop can look under your truck to make sure it's there. I hollowed out my cat so it looks like it's still there and I get 16-18 MPG with the I6.
