I'm looking to get a new truck (have another thread about that). I went to look at it and asked the salesman what he would give me for a trade-in on my old truck. He told me it would probably only be around 1,500 to 2,000. My question is whether or not it would be worth my while to hang on to it and try to sell it outright. It's a 96 Eddie Bauer F-150 short bed, reg. cab. It has a 6 cyl. and a 5 spd. Dual tanks, 137,000 miles, no rust at all, bedliner, good tires, new front pads and rotors, new o2 sensors, new oil pan gasket & oil change w/filter, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, wiper blades, and fuel filter. It has a class IV reciever hitch, also. I put a pioneer cd player with remote in it with all new speakers and a pioneer 760 watt amp and a 600 watt pioneer sub. For the most part, it runs great. it always starts right up with no smoke. Now for the bad: it does have an exhaust leak at the manifold and the check engine light is on, throwing the po171 and po174 lean codes. what would you do with it?

I would consider selling it on eBay. You can get more exposure than the local paper and when you get people bidding against each other, anything can happen, including getting more than you thought you could. You can even set a "reserve" price and if the bids don't reach that reserve, you don't have to sell the truck, unless you want to. It's an option to consider.

if the truck means something to you i would keep it. if not i would sell it. selling it i believe always gets you more money than trading it to a dealer.

Check out the online sites: kbb.com, edmunds.com, nadaguides.com - for some additional info.

Initial gut feel is that you're getting low-balled. Hard to price the aftermarket stuff - most of that is in the eye of the potential buyer. But for the factory Ford offerings, suggest you can do better selling private party.

And if the dealer is offering only what you said - I would really think about finding another dealer. Trucks aren't moving so well nowadays - perhaps there is a hungrier dealer?

Doubt it would be that much. Theyre going to look up and see what similar ones have sold at auction for and whatever that price is, offer you a few hundred less for yours. Something like that I would sell privately.

It is 20+ years old, has issues. 1500-2000 is typical for an old trade in. After checking KBB (Cinci), typical trade in is around 1300-1800 in good condition, so they are in the ball park.With the issues you state, it is debatable if it falls into the "good" category.That's what I was offered too.. Likely they would send it out to auction or put it in the bargain basement in the back of the building. If you think you can get more, put it on Craigslist but beware, you will have to sort out the bottom feeders. Anyone buying it, assuming they have someone else fix the issues is likely to put 500-750+ in it. It's not going to fetch top dollar. Why not keep it as a beater and keep that new one like new longer.
