Default 93 f150 conversion

Alright so here's the deal i have a 93 f150 2wd and been considering converting it to 4x4 as a project, it has an extended cab and a short bed, and has an automatic e40d transmission in it.
I have a couple questions: Could you tell me what transmission will fit in it and from what years are compatible?
I'm pretty sure i know all the parts that I'll need for the conversion but if someone has done this before and could give me a list so i don't forget anything it would be much a appreciated. Thanks

Also this is kind of off topic but are the splines on a 89 f150 5.8 transmission metric or standard?

You have a lot of ambition, much more than me. I would sell the thing and buy and old 4x4 with the same body style. I'm no help, but good luck

You can use any tranny offered in an F150, best to stick within '80-'93. I think someone else posted that after '93 the electrical plug on the E4OD was different. If you don't use the E4OD then your check engine light may stay on because the computer doesn't get signals from the tranny anymore. You can switch to a manual transmission computer to keep the light off if you switch to a non-electronic automatic or manual tranny.

You can stay with a E4OD so you don't have to worry about computer problems. You just need to find one out of a 4wd so the transfer case will bolt up.

Default no interchange

Your only trans options are to stick with the e4od or go to a manual or c6. Don't know if they made a aod for your motor, I am a strait6 guy, but even if they did you would have to change wires computer and such that would make it cost more to go to a lighter duty trans. On the 91 and older trucks you could unplug the trans and not throw a check light. Going to 4x seems like a lot of work and money, just buy a different truck and spend some of that money you were going to waste on making it slick.

Well yeah of course it would be cheaper and easier, but what's the fun in that?
And i meant interchangeable e40d's, like what years fit or all they all the same, I'm just not sure

It wouldn't necessarily be cheaper to get another truck as long as you do the work yourself. Now if you had to buy the parts AND pay someone to put them on then it might be cheaper to get another truck. I swapped my 4 speed manual for a 5 speed manual for under $100.
