Default 89 F150 Dual Tank Problem 6cyl.

OK...Need a little advice

A few weeks ago I found gas leaking out the front tank gas cap. At the time, I was on rear tank. I switched to the front tank and drained some gas off. Ran fine after, now when on front tank the engine will start sputtering like its not getting gas, switch to rear tank it runs fine.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong??? If I switch back to front it will run fine for a bit but eventually...I'll have to switch back to rear.

Should I drain front and just use rear? Does both tanks have a fuel pump?
What could be cost to fix?

Thanks

Pump in each tank. Each pump has a check valve. Sounds like it's crossfilling. If it has a failing check valve the rear pump could be pumping gas in to the front tank, which would make it overfill.
A fuel pressure gauge (about $60 or loan a tool) would help narrow things down.
It kinda sounds like you're going to have to replace the front pump I would think.

His is an '89, it's different.

Do you use both tanks equally or has the front one been unused for a while? Three fuel pumps, possible the front tank one is weak. Possible the DFR is sticking also, it has the switching device.

DFR= dual function reservoir. It's on the frame rail near the frame pump and fuel filter. It's operated by pump pressure, the switch only selects which pump.

Ok DFR would explain why fuel comes out of front tank. Why would it intermittently starve for fuel on the front tank?

Because the valve is stuck or the pump doesn't have enough pressure to move it.

Default Help Tank Problems

OK...Hope someone can help.

Went out to move truck today and will not start....ran fine on front tank last week. Just turns over....

When I turn the key I don't hear either pump....selected front or back. Is it possible that neither pump would work with the problems I've been having?
