Default 87 f150 5.0 - hesitation and misfire?

Good day everyone. I have been working on an 87 f150 with a 302 and a 4 speed manual transmission that has been sitting for around 6 years. The PO had parked the truck after putting the wrong fuel pump relay in and burning out both the front tank and high pressure fuel pumps. When I got the truck, I replaced both these fuel pumps and the fuel filter, the fuel lines, bypassed the dual function reservoir (as it was bad), and dropped/cleaned the tanks. I also purged the old gas in the fuel rail and put in a bottle of injector cleaner, and did an oil change. At this point, I attempted to fire her up, she fired rite up and was idling about 700rpm. After a few minutes, when the truck warmed up, it began to surge and bit and wants to die. if I let off the gas or floor it, the truck dies. if i pump the gas then it will stay running and start backfiring and makes a sparse/random pinging sound from the drivers side rear of the engine.

So far, the IACV has been pulled and cleaned.
new rotor button, cap, wires, and plugs
ran seafoam thru the intake
checked for any air-obstructions in the air filter housing/hoses
double checked the timing W/O the spout plug

I have also tried to pull the codes, the CEL light will stay lit as long as the key is in the On positon with the jumper between STI and SIG-RTN (I have used this method to dump codes on Explorers without any problems)

symptoms:
idles fine around 700rpm when cold, then dies off when warm
when still cold, if given any gas the engine will rev after hesistating
once warm, the engine will die if any gas is given OR will stay running and backfire/ping if gas is pumped (crossfire maybe?)


I figure I should check the ECT and EGR system.... as these both would cause issues as the engine warms up. I also plan on checking/cleaning grounds.I would like to know if there is anything else I should check on as well and get any input on these problems.

Sounds like its leading to a egr problem, but I would get the codes before start throwing parts and money at it.

Also, have you check for vacuum leaks.

I have not found any vac leaks (so far, hehe). I do plan on pulling codes before i go to much further, though I need to figure out why the ECC wont go in to diag mode first. I plan on pulling the ECC out before going home tonight and checking everything out that I can. So far I have only thrown money in to the things I would normally replace after sitting for this long anyways. Either tomorrow or Saturday I am going to pull apart the EGR system and give it all a good cleaning/testing. It wouldnt surprise me if the EGR riser was clogged. hehe

I pulled the ECC and checked everything out, everything looked to be in order as far as i could tell. after putting the ECC back in the truck I was able to read the codes. The only current code i have is 11 for system pass. I was previously getting 24... but that was when i first tested it and the engine was not warm. Looks like I get to have some fun with the EGR system this weekend. yay!

Is that a KOEO, KOER, or C/M code? or is that what you got when you ran all three?

11 is the code that I got when I ran in all three modes. I guess in this case the ECC wasnt much help. hehe

With all codes clear I don't think you have a problem with your EGR system.

I would look at the distributor and TFI mounted ignition module. There is a Ford Technical Bulletin released, regarding a situation w/ our generation of trucks, specifically v8's, where the PIP spikes the timing every 8th firing, causing a miss.

It's a condition with how the PIP and the distributor inter-react, so replacement of the PIP alone won't cure the problem. Recommendation is to replace the Distributor ( which by doing so, replaces the PIP also). Replacement of the distributor is a lot less hassle than dealing with replacement of the PIP, so many people opt to replace the distributor as a unit anyway.

If this is the case with yours, just replacing the PIP could prove a fruitless effort. I also recommend a TFI module replacement at the same time, as it shares the same power and ground with the PIP. They also tend to share the same service life expectancy. When one goes, usually soon after the other goes.

I had the same problem with my 87 and it ended up being a bad stator/PIP. I replaced the distributor and TFI module and the problems went away.

Thank you for all your help with this, I havent had a chance to get back out and mess with the truck this weekend because I ended up getting sick, hopefully I will be back out over the next few days and will let everyone know what I find out.

i have been feeling better, the weather has been a little better (not raining or snowing today), and I had the money so I went and bought a new distributor last night after taking the old one off to test.... the stator/pickup assembly was a bit... toasty and smelled rather burnt. anyways, I just got the new distributor put on during my break and will be heading back out in about an hour to reconnect everything i unhooked and to adjust the time. hopefully everything will be better
