I6 MPG Mods
I've been seeing people on here claiming close to or above 20mpg on their trucks and I'd love to hear the process they took to get there.
Personally, I drive a 95 4.9l I6 4x4 with 3.55 LS gears, and I am lucky to get 14 MPG as an average. I don't drive like a maniac and don't accelerate hard.
I know 14 isn't terrible, but it would be great to be bringing in somewhere around 18mpg or higher. For those of you that know some mods and secrets, it would be great if y'all could share!

Dodge+Ford = always ready
i think the biggest thing that helped me was dont go faster then 65 if you can help it, both my trucks MPGs drop quick after 65. dont hammer it from stop lights/signs, ease into the gas pedal. dont change speeds (usually follow someone to close and you gotta keep letting off the gas and getting back on it to stay right behind them). how long you idle before leaving for work/school effects your MPG also, some people skip over that.
my 150 only has MSD cap and rotor and new plugs. i also seafoam it from time to time, usually once a year.
if i think of anything else ill update.

That's true. I usually stay under 65 also.
I forgot to mention, I have used seafoam a couple of times and I've replaced all plugs and their wires. I do need to replace the vapor canister, as that broke a while back. The vacuum line coming off it into the engine is currently taped over

I installed a cold air intake but used it as warm air from the engine bay. I did this Friday and I can already tell a difference in mpg. I used to fill the rear tank up and only go 125 miles on half a tank, and now I've been 140 and it still isn't on half a tank but it almost is. I drive the same route every day going 55 in a 70 mph zone. People hate me but it pays for itself in gas in no time.
I get anywhere from 15-20 mpg in my truck. We'll see what I get with this tank and I'll let you know by Friday if this thread is still alive. By the way everything is stock besides a thrush muffler and that warm air intake. The intake is a spectre btw. Cone filter.
A couple things have changed but basically the same setup.

my truck doesnt get bad gas mileage, would be better if i had o2 sensors on the exhaust manifold. what really helped me with mpgs was getting my kn air intake. also bigger low restriction exhaust helps too. thats whats next on my mods list.

Hi-Rev Motorsports
steps i took to get mileage from 14mpg to 24mpg
Tune up.
Cap, rotor (brass), plugs and good wires. I have the Taylor Spiro-pro
Added
MSD 6A spark box and MSD Street Fighter coil
Synthetic 10-40 motor oil. I use Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic.
30w Synthetic motor oil in the 5-speed M5OD (calls for Dextron III or Mercon but it aint heavy enough)
Timing bump to 14 degrees base timing. I can do 16 degrees but traction becomes an issue. I have 3.08 rear gears.
Lower 160 degree t-stat from the stock 195 degree. running a lower stat lets the engine use less fuel while making more power. i was able to pull 10% fuel out of the mapping and I could pull another 5% if I wanted. a 180 stat would be a better choice for some.
E-Fans. I installed 2x14in fans and removed the stock power sucking engine fan.
K&N drop in filter in the STOCK air box... FIPKs or the like suck under hood hot air and that negates power by messing with the IAT sensor. Hotter Intake Air charge and the ECU starts adding fuel to the mapping...
1-Cat only and NO muffler on 2.5in pipe. Rear cat hollowed and pipe out the back with correct tail pipe just no muffler and its quiet... has a slight rumble but nothing aggressive...
I stay under 65 mostly but even on stock 275 tires i can bury the speedo easy... it doesnt have to work at speeding like it did before.
