Default 4x4 conversion?

Hi, I was just wondering how much modification is involved in converting over to four drive in a f series. I heard you have to weld in the front crossmember from the donor vehicle? I did a conversion on a rust free nevada cherokee once and it was a rather simple bolt in. I need a new transmission anyway I believe so I figured why not change to a 4 drivetrans and get a used front and rear diff. Any help would be great. -Ron

Oh boy this is a complicated one. To switch a traditional 2wd to a 4wd it would make things a lot simpler to have a donor truck to start from. Then be prepared to spend a lot of time refabricating key parts to work. The two trucks go down the same assembly lines but have a lot of different key parts and it wont be easy to switch. I did this swap with a 89-90 dodge 3/4ton it also require the retitling and getting it inspected by the state it was a pain to make it all legal you better keep the receipts.
