Default 1996 F150 reviews needed

My dad is wanting to trade his F-150 for my 97 Jimmy 4x4. I have always loved the early 90's body styles and I was seriously condisering the trade. He purchased it for $4,300.00 last year. It has 95k miles on it and it is SUPER clean inside and out. Its in 95% PERFECT condition. It is the 300ci straight 6 and manual 4 spd I think.

Im just looking for a little review on the longevity of these trucks. What are some of the first things to go out on them? If I get it I plan to put in 4.10's to tow my 3k lb landscape trailer. How do you think the transmission will hold up for this? How many miles can I expect from the engine?

You can expect at least 250,000 from a straight 6 and you can never go wrong with a stick. The first thing to go on my F-150 was the power steering pump.

I have a 93 with the straight 6 with manual and never had any troubles with it. Never hauled as much as you're looking to do either but don't see why it would be a prob.

Put steel fill plugs in it and don't drive it like a race car and yes. I've flogged two of them, both 4 wheeling, hauling and unstucking people. And never an issue. The 300? Its temperature dependant for mileage, they like being warm to get good mileage. They start to make a bit of noise when they get up there in mileage, thats typically crank/cam related as bearing get worn in the center.

If that things a 4 speed w/o overdrive its bullet proof and 5 speeds are damn tough too, I would throw down the 40-50 bucks to put some lucas heavy duty or lucas synthetic in it and if you go with 4.10s that trailer will not be an issue.

I've got 345,000 on my '96 4.9, and it still runs strong with no leaks. Longevity shouldn't be an issue if regular maintenance has been performed.
