Default Well, I dropped the Transmission - now what???

Hey all, haven't posted in a while - but have been back to read a few times.

So the tranny is sitting in my garage - can't get the silver plate inside off to look at (I hope) the clutches and stuff?

First time dropping a transmission. It's an e40D. I pull on the plate and it seems like it sucks back in like it's on a spring?

Thanks for the look -

Are you talking about the pump? I think they use a slide hammer type tool to get that out.

dont tear it apart if you dont know what you;re doing...either get the video or manual with a parts breakdown...

Thanks Sean - looks like it was the pump. Doc, found a rebuild tutorial here: http://www.thedieselgarage.com/projects/e4od/
Looks like I bit off a project here.

Anybody have any advice on parts that are important to replace while I'm in here? I was planning to either get one of those rebuild kits from Kragen, or just see what parts look worn out and then replace those. Not really sure what I'm looking for though - my first time in a transmission.

Man - dropping a tranny without a tranny jack was a . Ropes, 2x8's, you name it. No idea how I'm gonna get it back in

Anybody have good advice on parts to replace while I'm in here? Hoping to come out with a trans that runs 100K miles or so with 400-500 invested.

By the way good news here - Couple weeks ago I traded my S&W 357 magnum for an 87 4x4 F150. Wasn't running, but was able to get it started after some time on the forum and under the hood. Advice from the last truck paid off again (distributor mistimed 180)! Runs great now - and it's the 302 so I can swap parts with my 91.

is there a reason you're taking apart the trans? if you're going to replace anything behind the pump, you might as well do a whole rebuild. i have a transmission manual for the e4od and it you'll need a few special tools. those can be expensive. just taking apart the pump and putting it back in is a pain in the *** without the alignment tool for putting the pump back together. i'm in the middle of repairing my first transmission as well, but i'm finding this stuff out the hard way...

Thanks for the reply 94Bronc.

I'm taking it apart because it quit working. It started making a soft metallic whooshing noise and then the truck slowly lost power until it quit moving in any gear.

After the truck cooled down, it went into gear again (all the gears worked), but there was a metallic brushing noise (not a grinding - more like two pieces of sheet metal sliding over each other) and when I got home there was about a half quart of fluid that dripped out of the torque converter drain plug.

That was when I dropped the tranny. Not sure how to start diagnosing the problem. Don't know if it's just the torque converter? Maybe the seals are bad? Since it's out, it seems like a rebuild is a good idea, but if the tools are expensive, maybe it's best to take the guts to a tranny shop and see if they'll cut me a deal? Don't really know which direction to go in next.

if you plan on doing the work yourself, i recommend getting a trans manual. i have this one http://www.auto-repair-manuals.com/F...ld-Manual.html and its been pretty useful. i haven't done a rebuild with it, but it shows step by step and tells you exactly what special tools you'll need. i assume you checked the fluid level before removing the trans, was it full? i'm kind of guessing here, but it sounds to me like it might be the pump thats causing the issues, but since there was only a half a quart in the converter i'd probably replace that too

another manual thats pretty usefull is
http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/sit...oduct/ATME4OD1
and
http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/sit...oduct/ATME4OD2

good luck, i think i have to replace the front pump in mine, but i'm crossing my fingers and hoping repairing the wire harness fixes my problem

Thanks for the links 94Bronc.

Torque converter was full. I should have said the half quart that leaked out came out the bottom of the bell housing drain plug - not from the torque converter.

oooooh, front pump seal blew, you dont need to take it apart to fix that really. just remove the converter and pull the seal. make sure to check that your trans cooler isnt clogged causing an overheat blah blah blah if the cooler lines and cooler are fine, i'd look at the pump. other than that if it shifts fine with full fluids i wouldnt worry about rebuilding it yet
