no spark
glad you have it running. I have similar problem but no spark. I had it running to set timinig and removed spout. we shut it down for some reason and now it wont start so I did the spark test again and it leads all the way to the ignition module because my led test light is blinking. ignition module is good though. so did my spout do something? i bought a code reader after all this and havent been able to get truck up to operateing temp to read them. any idea?

When it DID run, how did it sound? Did it sound normal (whatever that means)?
Or did it sound like a diesel truck? If it sounded like a diesel it's 180 out of time. If it sounded normal (like a regular gas engine), what I would do is retest everything. Are you sure you have adequate compression in each cylinder?
What does your oil gauge say when you turn the engine over? Does the needle immediately flip over when you turn the key?
I know you may feel that your ignition module is ok. And, it very well may be. Mine was testing ok but I changed it out anyway as the truck is now 17 years old and it looked like the original. I kept the original anyway just in case the new one goes out so I can put it back in (in a pinch).
Did you change out the distributor?
I'll try and help you out as much as I can. Just need a little more information.
Keep at it and you'll get it running!

Did you check to make sure that when you set the timing you had compression on the upward/compression stroke? I had mistakenly had mine 180 degrees out and it was still running.
yepdid that. a couple of times. just to make sure.

sounded like a tractor the first time we had it running.

or like you yu said maybe a diesel with a bad injector.
What does your oil gauge say when you turn the engine over? Does the needle immediately flip over when you turn the key? I forgot to tell my sons to look for that, they are the ones cranking or key on because you have to hold the cluth down to perform test. I forgot.

still have this same one.

I only changed the stator inside the distributor. which is the pip (profile ignition pickup) or pickup module. so many names!

I did, I did. It is started. my truck being outside made it hard to work on because the moisture in the air. so this sunday after church I was able to have a nice day to look it over with my helper. I started to perform no spark test from the beginning again. No spark at plugs, No spark at coil, then this is where it got good. i was test the volts at coil and found a broken wire. REALLY!!! I have looked at that same wire 30 times. oh well at least I found it. i was able to solder it together and started the truck and let it get to temp and run my code reader and it displayed a 522 which says I didnt have it in nuetral. timing is next. not sure why this said not in neutral but will work on that now.

I have a 4.9l 1994 5 speed. I had a prior problem which involved replaceing dist cap and rotor and wires and plugs and coil.. now I went to check codes and first I got the 522. then I stuck a broom handle to hold clutch down and fixed that... but heres the thing I need help with now... I have a timeing light that tell you the rpm's and I removed the spout and everything is set up just like instructions say to do. the truck will not smooth idle. so how can I go to KOER test if I can not get the idle to maintain? what is my problem here?
thankyou in advance for the answer!. Thats me saying you will know the answer.

finally,....does it start and idle but just idle rough? or will it die out and just not keep running?
i know it sounds like i'm going back to the same thing I said before but it really sounds like you're crankshaft is out 180 degrees. use some sandpaper and get some rust off of the markings and double check, triple check, etc.
take the no. 1 spark plug out and turn your crankshaft and shine a light in the hole and make sure the top of that piston is up and the go back down under the truck and see where you're mark is lined up.
do you still have spark at the no. 1 plug? wire? distributor wire? ignition coil?
the three things you need to keep it running are compression, fuel and spark. i know you already know this but go back and think of the basics and then start over. you will find the problem. i had to step away from mine for a while and come back at it with a fresh set of ideas on troubleshooting.
if it idles and sounds like a diesel i'm betting its out....sorry for the redundance...
