Default 1995 F150 XL 4x4 Bad Locking Hubs?

Hey guys, my son and I were out fishing on the beach last night and almost got stuck. It appeared it popped out of 4x4 but the light on the dash was on and the gear shifter stayed in place. At one point you could hear the front drive shaft just spinning after I took my foot off the gas pedal. I tried going between 4x4 high and low and eventually it grabbed in 4x4 low and we were able to get off the beach. There are still the stock hubs on this truck. Juist seemed as it disengaged? I was think of putting in a new set of locking hubs any thoughts? Not a good feeling getting stuck on the beach at midnite an no one around.

By the way we only cought a couple small skates. The stripers have not really made their way back to New jersey yet.

Thanks....

Yea good idea to get new locking hubs. I perosnaly would go with warn preimum locking hubs they are about 100$ but its no joke inside. the are alluminum outside looks really nice and steal springs and rings not plastic like the stock. they also have a lifetime warrenty so if the brake send um out!
hope that helps

OK so I have ordered the Warn Premium hubs and should be here any day. I am pretty mechanically inclined but no expert by no means. So is replacing these manual hubs something I can do myself? Any special tools needed or does anyone have any instructions on how to do this? I would really appreacite it.

Thanks....

yeah its pretty easy. might want a pair of rubber gloves. also wont hurt to through a hefty amount of new grease on it and the inside.

Do not use white lithium grease no matter what you do. Get some good bearing grease at the auto parts store and give them a healthy coating on the inside.
