Truck has the wrong tranny?
I believe my truck has had a transmission replacement with the wrong transmission. The door tag says code U, which is the 4r70w. The transmission itself is a code W AODE. They put the 4r70w in starting in 93 i think and my truck is a 94 with only 112k. Now from what I've gathered the trannys are the same except the 1st and 2nd gear rations...
If the truck has the AODE trans in place of a 4r70w with the the stock computer for the 4r70w it is probably shifting improperly. I have noticed the truck is really doggy in the bottom of 2nd gear (no tach so i dont know the RPMs) but that makes sense in my mind. The 4r70w has lower 1st and 2nd gear ratios so the trucks computer is shifting based off those specs instead of the AODE's meaning it is shifting to early and the truck is ending up really low in the RPM range.
Does that make sense in anyone else's mind? Makes me want to swap computers out... Could I swap the computers with say a 91-92 5.0 f150 with the AODE and would that make a difference?
-note: the truck shifts smoothly (beisdes a pretty firm 1st gear shift, but i've gathered that is semi common) it just seems to shift to early making it a complete dog. 0-60 is probably 15 or more seconds going down hill.

Most speed limits in my town are 25. With that being said my truck can be doggy around town. My 4r70w moves pretty quick to 3rd gear, then jumps back to second going up a hill ect.... I think its just the nature of the beast with an auto.

This is too much for the average guy to take in. Take it to a local transmission shop, most of them will do a Free Diagnostics of it, it cant hurt to see what they say!

The W before AODE stands for Wide, " Wide Ratio".. And that is a 4r70w. If you have stock gears your truck will feel sluggish at lower RPM's. My 94 use to feel like that before I freshened tranny and install 351.

Could stop past the tranny shop to see what they say..
And yes, I realize that is the nature of an auto truck with 3.31 gears. I'm more so curious if this swap having been done could be fixed better by having the proper computer tune for that transmission.

My 94 had same combo, 302, 4r70w, but never checked the gears ratio. Wasnt too worried about them since I know the Lightning drive train swap was in near future.

Yea this year should have the 4r70w but for whatever reason a previous owner put in an AODE. I see the guy who owned it for the last ten years/32k miles from time to time and he knows the prior owner. Ill have to ask him.
Wait...Unless your sayin that AODE W on the trans is the 4r70w? I figured the w was the code letter
