Does anyone have any tips on replacing an air compressor? Also, where is the cheapest place to find one? Are any special tools needed? Anything to watch out for?
The weather where i am is hot and humid and rolling the windows down worked find in the early spring, but now, it just isn't cutting it. My girlfriend is pregnant and I want her as comfortable as possible.
Thanks, Austin

Try www.rockauto.com or www.partsgeek.com or www.autopartswharehouse.com. Also be sure to get an o-ring kit and a new orifice tube. I think you have to have a disconnect tool for that but but you can pick one up fairly cheap.

Just had mine replaced. I ended up just having someone do it. I bought some parts from rock auto, and the actual compressor from advance. The rock auto parts were orifice tube and accumulator/drier.
I dont know about special tools, but you will want to flush the system too.
I don't regret paying a mechanic to do this job. You will also have to evacuate the freon prior to replacing compressor, as well as obtain a vacuum prior to recharging your system.
If you are going to do it yourself, search for a thread on here with a diy ac flush. Good luck, hope you get your gf/baby cooled off quickly!

Read the instructions for installing the compressor, it needs to be turned by hand several times to get the oil out of the compressor and into the lines. If you are going to discharge/charge the system yourself-wear eye protection. Everybody else hit on some good points.
