1994 manual shifting problems
Hello all I have a 94 4x4 with a 4.9 and a true 4sp & over-drive.
First question, what type of trans do I have? Out of the countless number of pick-up I’ve had over the years I’ve never had a pick-up with a true 4sp./w overdrive.
Main question is, it is getting real hard to shift. I’ve had this truck for a couple of years now I don’t drive it a lot and it has always been hard to get into gear especially first gear after that rolling down the road it wasn’t to bad.
Took in on a short road trip this weekend and over a couple of days it has gotten very hard to get into gear and the shifter has gotten really sloppy, sloppy to the point when I do get into first gear I have to be careful not to smash my finger against the dash and shifting up from first gear is a search for the right spot with there being 6 to 8 slop in the shift handle. Has anyone else ran into this problem? Any suggestion where to start looking?
Thanks
Tim C.

It's a Canadian thing eh!
You have a 5spd. 4+OD= 5spd. More specifically the M5OD-R2 transmission.
I would inspect you're fluid level first, low fluid will cook the transmission quick if not filled. Most likley the shifter bushings are worn out creating the slop and the reason its getting harder to shift gear. The shift forks may also be wearing out adding to the difficulty.

Yes the transmission is full of fluid that was the first thing I checked. The shifter in some way is my first suspect?
Oh and Sean you don’t count reverse as a gear that would mean I have a six speed.
