Default 1993 f250 4x4 problems

my friends f250 with automatic hubs had been making a loud popping sound when you engage 4x4 and felt as though it was slipping when it popped. now theres no popping and the 4x4 is not locking in. it will spin 1 tire in the back but the 4x4 light is on. any ideas on what to check first. i'm hoping this isn't a new problem and someone on here can point me in the right direction without going through to many dead ends

Theres your problem. Switch to manual locking hubs and problem solved.

if you can get to the axles when it's not supposedly locked in see if you can turn the axles with your hand and then try to lock it in 4x4 and if you can spin them when it's supposed to be locked in then its the hubs.

My dad had a F-250 4x4, 5 speed, with a 460 in it. His was popping and jerking when he would lock his hubs in. A week after that, I was replacing a front differential for him If it was my truck, I'd get rid of the crappy automatic hubs and put manual hubs in it, then go from there.
