1992 5.0 Engine Rebuild Troubles....Need Suggestions!
Hey everyone,
My cousin has a 1992 F150 XL regular cab 4x4 with the 5.0L. Long story short about a year ago he blew a cylinder and had the truck pretty much sitting in his drive way for a good 8 months. A couple months back he decided to rebuild the engine and restore the truck to its former glory. The body and frame are in great shape and the transmission had been replaced less then a year before he blew the engine. The big ticket items were an AC recharge, new exhaust and of course the engine itself.
The AC and the exhaust got fixed without incident and the truck passed emissions with flying colors and the AC blows ice cold. The rebuilt engine was running great and it looked like the old girl was back in action.
Coming back from a fishing trip 4 days after he got it back from the shop the truck started running real ragged on the highway, sputtering and jerking. Turns out his battery was dead cause his alternator was bad, the shop didn't think to test / replace it when they rebuilt the engine. So a new battery and new alternator later he got the truck back.
At that point it had a persistent high idle. Even after running for 15 minutes it would not idle down past 1200 rpm. The mechanic insisted that the ECU just needed time to reset. 2 weeks later it was still doing it making shifting from park to drive or reverse very unpleasant.
He has now returned it to the shop because it is running like garbage again, really rough idle, surging at highway speeds and is sucking back gas way worse then it ever has.
I feel pretty bad for him cause he loves that truck and has spent lots of money trying to get it going again. Anyone have any suggestions of things that could help? The truck wasn't throwing any codes apparently. He's past the point of no return with this thing so getting it running nice is the best option.
