Thanks Sean. The job is done. I'm not sure I'll do that again anytime soon but it should be good for another 17 1/2 years!

Congratts buddy, just reviewed the thread, started in 3/08. Sorry it took so long to get the correct motivation. Sure hope this T-stat wasn't stuck closed for 9 months. Its just nuts and bolts, you Putts.

I had trouble replacing mine in my 96 5.0 but I finally got it. I put a 160 degree t-stat and put the blue gasket maker on both sides of the gasket and got it "gooden tight" I d didn't have a torque wrench small enough. It doesn't leak at all and thanks to the lower degree t-stat it won't touch r of "normal" for anything

160 degrees isn't warm enough. You need to replace it with the recommended 195 degree thermostat. 160 degrees doesn't allow the truck to warm up fully, and will keep the computer in closed loop. Closed loop means wasted gas, less fuel mileage, poorer performance and higher emissions.

a 180 will keep it in closed loop but sean's right a 160 is to low. also the cooler and engine runs the faster parts wear, i learned that in a machine shop.

I just swapped my 160 out for a 195 and I can already tell it made a huge difference. Sitting at traffic lights I could smell my rich exhaust, now I barely get a whiff every once in a while, but that's my leaking exhaust that needs fixing. I am sure the mpg of this tank will be higher, I was hitting 10 mpg before.

Not trying to put salt into the wound, we need to forget the good old boys and what they say. Stay with the manufactures recommendations. Remember, "they're not making them like they used to". Thats another crock of --it. Years back and not to many when we got to 100K, we bragged and thought we were lucky. Its nothing to get to 200K nowadays with twice the MPG. As I said don't listen to the good old boys, Im closing in on 65 and I enjoy laughing at them.
