it's not above the gas pedal, I've looked everywhere. where is it?

It's not the little gold box, and there's nothing next to it except 2 weatherpacks running to a plastic dust cover.

Should be on, driver side mounted behind kick panel

You have to access it from the driver side firewall behind the front tire. It slides out of the firewall towards the tire.

remove the plastic fender liner, and pull that sucker out after removing the clip, and retaining bolts/nuts.

It is technically behind the aluminum steering column mount on the far driver side, not the kick panel.

Here is a good one. After taking my ECM out and taking it to the parts store, I find out the ECM is a high altitude model! So a pickup that was sold in Texas was fitted with a High Altitude ECM...no wonder the pickup has never run right!

Replacement is on its way.

...might want to double check that if you haven't already, only the map sensor controls altitude on these older trucks

Well, that is the problem isn't it? They have the book and it is behind the desk! But even if it were the proper one I think it is toast anyway, I have pretty well eliminated any of the obvious problems and it has never changed anything. As I was driving home a few months ago and it just shut down on me, backfired and when it came back to life it ran perfectly! Next time, it fired up and went right back to refusing to idle and taking it a few minutes to clear the gas out of it. It is haunted...it has a demon.

I wish it were an older model without all that computer controlled stuff on it but I am sure that if it were working properly I would never give it a second thought!
