Default 1990 F150 w/M5od-r2 what fluid to use?

Please allow me to apologoze for asking this question. I've searched hundreds of articles and forums on the internet. And there all up in arms over what is the reccomended fluid? Myself I'm looking at some Amsoil. But I'm confused as to whether its supposed to be filled with gear oil or Atf? My hanes manual states 92 and earlier 4 speed transmissons use sae 80w gear lube while 1993 and later 4 and 5 speeds use Mercon.. which confuses me even more because I have an 90' 5 speed... Any suggestions? Or facts for that matter?

M5OD uses regular old Dex/Merc ATF. Takes a little over 3 quarts if I recall correctly.

The owners manual for my 91 says to use Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid, for the 5 speed overdrive transmission (Mazda-R2).

You would really think they would use something a little bit thicker than automatic transmission fluid, but they don't. I would have asked the same question when the time comes for me to change my transmission fluid

No. The friction modifier is for differentials with a limited slip.
