Default Timing bump and emissions...

How does a timing bump effect emissions? Got a 302 motor and im wanting to improve mpg and performance some. Upgrading the ignition system to accomodate, but dont want to increase my odds of failing. I would think it would burn cleaner. Thoughts?

I dont know about the V8. I did it to my l6 but with a hotter coil and plugs jumping a 55 Gap. But you can damn near run anything through them and still pass emission. Keep in mind that anything to high will enne ping unless you burn 89.

Thanks for the advice. I took my initial emission's test today (just bought a new truck), and passed on stock ignition/timing with flying colors. I definitely have some wiggle room. I ordered MSD coil and wires yesterday, as well as some decent wires and motorcraft copper plugs. I won't be able to tell you how it effects emissions until next year, but I'll let you know how the upgrade does. PO stated he was getting 12 MPG. Everything looks original on the truck, so the tune up and seafoam will do it some good! Also plan on doing the water pump, as it looks like it may be leaking.

40k to a 48k accel coil
8.8mm thundervolt wies
timing bump to 16. I dont mind paying for 89octain.

I also went with a cooler thermostat. just because i was throwing more heat. later discovered it wasnt really needed.

Gained about 5hp, which isnt bad for the mod.

Truck seems very happy with it, meaning never caused any cels.
