Default driving issue with 88 5.8 v8

I have a 1988 f150 and it idles fine and when in park I can presst the gas fine. When I put it in drive or reverse it dies as soon as I press the gas. Any ideas?

Could be quite a few things. Have you pulled codes? That's the best way to start.

My advice is to buy the code reader and cable and follow the directions. Worked well for me to diagnose and then repair.

Code reader is not necessary. A paper clip and pen and paper is all that is needed besides a list of codes. Possibly a circuit test light. Other than that, the following thread should net you the necessary results.

Could be a couple things

Can you give more information, black smoke? rough idle? Last time changed plugs and wires rotor?

Could be fuel regulator, injector, vacuum issue, need more info

Take it to autozone and have them hook up a scan tool (they do it for free). Then look up the codes.

I took my '90 to Oreilly's to have the codes pulled. The guy said that they didn't have an obd1 code reader and that no other parts store does. He said I'd have to find a local shop or someone that still had an old scan tool. I knew that didn't sound right and I noticed right behind him on the wall was an innova ford obd1 code reader. I bought it for about $30 and was on my way.

Check your fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge. It could be low
