1988 F-150 5.0L EFI; Changed ignition control module.....
I changed the ignition control module, cap and button; put everything back the way it was(or as least I thought I did) and now it won't crank. It just sputters. I've wired the distiburtor as 15423678.

You mean won't fire ? if it turns over, that's cranking.
Anyway, I don't know the firing order offhand, but it should be in search or just go to google.
It sounds like you may have gotten the distributor in wrong.
You need to be on the compression stroke of #1 cylinder(pull the plug and turn the motor by hand till you get pressure in that cylinder) then keep turning till the timing mark is at about 10 degrees before top dead center.
At this point, the distributor rotor should be pointing at exactly #1 spark plug wire.
You'll probably find that you're either 180 degrees out, or you might be a bit past it in a clockwise direction.
Remember that as you pull the distributor up, the rotor will turn counterclockwise a bit, and as you put it in it will turn clockwise (because of the angle cut teeth)
So you have to have it pointing a little (10 degrees ?) to the left of where you want it to end up so that it will be pointing exactly at #1 when you push it down flush.
With the crankshaft at 10 DBTDC you can now turn the distributor a little so that the little bump in the dist is exactly at the pickup (PIP) you just installed.
That should get you close enough to get it to fire, then reset the timing properly

I was unaware of the cylinders being numbered different. I rewired the plug wires and it fired up. thanks chris. The original problem still isn't fixed though. The truck shuts off with me going down the road and when you let it sit for a few minutes it'll fire up and run. Not sure what's causing that. Coil will be the next thing I change out.

you might check the cap, look for build up on the metal studs, also check your rotor and see if its good or bad, my truck sat for months because i couldnt figure out what the hell was wrong with it. replaced the coil, spark plugs, the fuel pump, the battery, had the ignition control modual checked, and the damn thing still didnt start. dumped all that money into new parts, and it was the 5 dollar rotor that was stopping me.
